Thou aren’t your average metal band. They’re committed to DIY principles. They have no clear interest in starting a mosh pit, signing to a major label, or in fact being labeled at all.
Tell them they are metal and they’ll tell you they are grunge. Haunted by the stereotypes of southern sludge metal–Eyehategod, Acid Bath, etc. they strive to be much more.
They are a band of principles–obsessed with conveying the pain and struggle of the average person.
Their last record, 2014’s Heathen was greeted with critical acclaim for the band’s experimentation with horns and strings. It was an album that captured the ache of a society undone, a world of crumbling infrastructure, lives lashed to menial jobs, the small space between survival and nothingness.
Thou have a special connection to grunge. Perhaps its the pure but unrealized ideals of the early grunge movement–piety, humbleness, empathy–that has seen them cover a good portion of Nirvana’s back catalog, as well as songs by Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden.
In the last two years, I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with the band and there is no doubt they are committed to art over commerce. They have about 5 albums planned–an acoustic record, a drone record, possibly a record of reinterpreted older material. This summer will see the release of their first proper album since 2014 in the form of Magus on Sacred Bones Records.
Thou just dropped an album called The House Primordial, perhaps making the last sentence incorrect. But celebrate, cause its new Thou!
We’re proud to present this 4-song performance from Thou. Thanks to Open Stage Media and Proctors for making this possible.
The setlist is as follows:
“By Endurance We Conquer off of Thou’s album Summit
“Stain” by Nirvana
