Interestingly, the Madison Theatre in Albany is dipping into the Capital Region music scene with a new series aptly titled Hip Hop Wednesdays. This week, Baltimore rapper Rakeem Miles will be performing his self-proclaimed “alternative hip-hop” to the beloved local movie theatre to kick off the first night. Miles released his latest project “Do They Really Love You?” last year which features his personal narratives backed by dreamy, colorful beats that often recall Frank Ocean–who he names as one of his biggest influences on his website, and titles the album’s last track after. These creative instrumentals are modern yet distinct from the trap bangers that are dominating current hip-hop; a good comparison to his sound would be the Arizona trio Injury Reserve. Both artists are clear descendants of the Kanye era.
