Tonight at the Massry Center: John Pizzarelli Quartet

John Pizzarelli Quartet

Massry Center for the Arts, Albany, Friday, 4/21, 7:30 PM

If he weren’t such a swell guitar player, we’d still know John Pizzarelli for his deep knowledge of American pop and jazz music (which shines through on the public radio show he co-hosts with singer and wife Jessica Molaskey, Radio Deluxe), and his deft way of singing a wide array of pop tunes. But he is a swell guitar player, and bandleader, and he’s bringing his quartet to the College of Saint Rose’s premiere concert hall this Friday. About that wide range: Pizzarelli’s most recent albums have been tributes to the likes of Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer and Paul McCartney. And the last was suggested by McCartney himself, after the guitarist guested on McCartney’s own album of pop covers (Kisses On the Bottom) in 2012. We don’t know what Pizzarelli will play at the Massry Center, but we’re sure it will all be, well, swell.
