From the reviews, you’d think that critics were trying to turn EDM duo The Chainsmokers into this new Nickelback, AKA “the band you must hate.” Spin half-jokingly referred to The Chainsmokers’ “totalitarian reign,” and the big lamestream media outlets (Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, USA Today) crapped all over their new album. But guess what–neither the duo nor their fans care. They’re popular dudes writing catchy tunes that The Kids Today enjoy, and we have no doubt that The Kids Today will turn out en masse at the Times Union Center on Friday night. Maybe we should all take a tip from Morgan Baila at Refinery29: “Compared to the other dumpster fires happening out there, what is so bad about The Chainsmokers and their catchy . . . songs? Just relax. It’s getting old.” “Old,” like most of their critics. With special guest Kiiara.
