Anne Akiko Meyers
EMPAC, RPI, Troy, Tuesday, 4/18, 8 PM
Anne Akiko Meyers is one of the great violin virtuosos of our time; and she’s coming to EMPAC for a recital with pianist Akira Eguchi. She will perform a mix of music from the standard repertory and contemporary works that she herself has commissioned. The former will include works by Beethoven, Ravel and Arvo Part. The latter will be Morten Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium,” Jakub Ciupinski’s “Wreck of the Umbria,” and Einojuhani Rautavaara’s “Fantasia.” When Meyers premiered “Fantasia” in Kansas City, Mo., a critic wrote, “The Fantasia explicitly showed off Meyers’ expressive and impressive sound.” Apropos of nothing, Meyers plays a 1741 “Vieuxtemps” Guarneri del Gesu violin, which is worth (at least) $16 million. We’re told it sounds real pretty. Tickets are available here.
