The Linda, Saturday, 3/11, 8 PM
Singer-songwriter Lucy Kaplansky returns to the region this weekend for a show in the intimate setting of The Linda. Kaplansky was in NYC around the same time–and moved in the same circles–as the likes of Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin. She famously took a different path, but a practice in psychology didn’t make her happy and she came back to making music. A series of increasingly acclaimed albums followed, as Kaplansky developed her voice both as a songwriter and as a gifted curator of other people’s songs. As a critic for No Depression wrote in 2007, “There is a serenity, a stillness, in Lucy Kaplansky’s work that almost deflects attention; it’s a quality that may have contributed to her being overlooked in the AOR/post-folk world. . . .” No one’s overlooking Kaplansky now.
