WOOC Benefit with Sierra Leone’s Refugee All-Stars, Vusi Mahlasela

The Egg, Friday, 2/17, 7:30 PM

Warm your body and your soul at The Egg with the sweet, uplifting sounds of West African musicians Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars (pictured) and South African singer/songwriter Vusi Mahlasela. The former are a group of actual, Sierra Leone refugees that the Independent’s Andy Morgan describes as “a defiantly warm and good-humoured African throwback to the gorgeous harmony vocals and lilting backbeat of The Heptones, Burning Spear, or Carlton and the Shores.” Mahlasela’s songs are similarly optimistic, merging excellent guitarwork, a one-of-a-kind voice and lyrical poeticism. The concert is a cooperation between The Egg and The Sanctuary for Independent Media in order to fundraise for a new, non-commercial, listener-supported Capital Region radio station called WOOC 105.3 FM.
