Girl Blue debuts “Drunk” video

Girl Blue has debuted the latest video from her album “I am Not a Star”.  The bluesy thumper of a track is paired with choreography by Hanna Straney and was shot and edited by Shannon Straney whose photography regularly appears in this publication.

I spoke to Shannon about how the video came together.

“I’ve known Arielle for a while now and everything she’s done as Girl Blue has consistently blown me away.  My sister, Hannah, had the idea to get everyone together and film something, so we picked the song and brainstormed a bit about what it was about Drunk that resonated with us and how to turn that into a tangible aesthetic . She, as well as the rest of the dancers in the video, go to the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase –  we shot everything in an afternoon the day after Thanksgiving,” Shannon Straney told me.

“For the “Drunk” video Hannah and I came up with the idea of two sections, one more monotone and one blue.  We wanted the motion to feel like it was hectic and dragging, the idea of playing with time and weight, taking characteristics of the motions and feelings the come from being intoxicated.  A lot of the ideas we had were looser and ended up being played out when we got everyone in front of the camera and let them interact and experiment,” she said.

“I don’t get to work with my sister too often (she’s finishing her last semester at Purchase and I’m based in Albany) but especially lately we’ve been trying to make a point to take advantage of any opportunities we have to create together.”
